AST are used on towboats when extreme maneuvering and stopping are required. The units replace the conventional shafting, struts, and rudders. They are best used in deep water where the chance of bottom impact is minimal. The ahead thrust does not exceed conventional propulsion but in cases the efficiency is superior due to the improved steering.
